Profile of Sergio Oliveira, Midfielder Who Broke Juventus’ Dream

The name of the Porto midfielder, Sergio Oliveira, stole the attention in the second leg match of the last 16 between Juventus vs Porto, Tuesday (9/3/2021). The Juventus vs Porto duel which took place at Allianz Stadium was a series of matches in the second leg of the Champions League last 16.

Juve actually managed to win 3-2 over representatives of Portugal in a match with extra time. The goals of the Bianconeri were scored by Federico Chiesa (49′, 63′) and Adrien Rabiot (117 ‘). Meanwhile, the visitors scored a brace that Sergio Oliveira bought (19′ with penalty, 115’).

However, Porto is the team that qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals. The reason is the team nicknamed Azuis e Branco won 2-1 in the first leg. As a result, the aggregate became 4-4. Hence, Porto moved on thanks to the aggressiveness of the away goals.

This left a dark note for Juventus, especially for Ronaldo. Ronaldo failed to make it to the Champions League quarter-finals twice in a row for the first time since 2006. CR7 previously received a nightmare after Juve were eliminated by Lyon in the last 16 of the 2019-2020 Champions League.

Meanwhile, advancing to the next round, of course Porto should thank Sergio Oliveira. Thanks to his contribution, the Portuguese giants managed to get through a difficult match in Turin because they had to play with 10 people from the 54th minute.

Then who is Sergio Oliveira, the “killer” of Cristiano Ronaldo cs? The player whose full name is Sergio Miguel Relvas de Oliveira is a soccer player from Portugal. He is an original product of the Porto academy which has joined the club since 2005. However, his work at the Stadion do Dragao did not immediately recognized. The player who is now 28 years old has to undergo several loan periods.

Understandably, as he was less competitive when he was so young. Not to mention, Porto has been defended by many famous midfielders in the 20th century such as Deco, Ricardo Quaresma, Joao Moutinho, to James Rodriguez. As a result, the age factor and intense competition have made Sergio often go on loan. It was noted that he had taken on loan roles, among others, SC Beira-Mare (Portuguese League), KV Mechelen (Belgian League), to Nantes (Ligue 1). According to transfermarkt data, even the midfielder was once released by Porto for a free transfer of FC Pacos de Ferreira who also appeared in the Portugal NOS League in 2014.

Sergio eventually returned to Porto a little later after being awarded a permanent contract for the second time. However, he still did not get the opportunity, so he continued to undergo the loan period. In the summer of 2019, Sergio finally ended his loan spell at the last club, PAOK Greek League. Since then Sergio has also succeeded in the main squad for Azuis e Branco.

Overall, the midfielder has appeared 139 times with a contribution of 29 goals and 20 assists for Porto. At the national team level, Sergio has only served five times with Portugal. Sergio’s highest achievement with the Selecao das Quinas occurred at the junior level when he led Portugal to runner-up in the U20 World Cup (2011) and Euro U21 (2015).
