The Sad Story of Son Heung-min, Scored a Record of 100 Goals in the Premier League when His Grandfather Died

The sad story of Son Heung-min, who scored a record 100 goals in the Premier League when his grandfather died, will be reviewed in this article. The moment itself occurred precisely in April 2023.

Yes, Tottenham Hotspur player from South Korea, Son Heung-min, was finally able to score his 100th goal in the Premier League. He made this sweet note when Tottenham faced Brighton & Hove Albion at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, on Saturday 8 April 2023.

Unfortunately, amidst his immense happiness at being able to record 100 goals in the Premier League, there was sadness inside Son Heung-min. The moment was very emotional because Son had experienced difficult times in the previous few weeks because his grandfather passed away.

The passing of his grandfather certainly gave him deep sadness. The reason is, Son Heung-min himself has a close relationship with his family because he has always supported his career since childhood.

“This is something I have dreamed of. This is an extraordinary achievement that I would not have been able to achieve without my teammates,” said Son Heung-min to the BBC after the match.

“It’s incredible to score 100 goals in the Premier League. I am very emotional because I have experienced difficult times in the last few weeks,” he continued.

Son Heung-min’s career in football has not been easy. He had to spend his childhood in New Zealand until the age of 9 years. Then, he returned to South Korea to attend school.

Son only attended formal school up to secondary level. He chose to focus on football and joined the FC Seoul Academy. Son’s father himself is a former football player, namely Son Woong-jung. No wonder, he received great support from his father.

In 2008, when he was 16 years old, Son Heung-min joined the Hamburg SV academy and moved to Germany. In just 2 years, he made his debut in the first team at the DFB Pokal. However, Son Heung-min only lasted for 3 seasons. In that time period, he was able to score 20 goals and 3 assists in 78 matches.

The German club, Bayer Leverkusen, also bought him for 10 million euros or Rp. 169 billion in the 2013 summer transfer market. This purchase was one of the most expensive made by Leverkusen at that time. During 2 seasons with Leverkusen, Son Heung-min was able to score 29 goals and 11 assists in 87 matches in all competitions. Finally, Tottenham Hotspur brought in Son Heung-min for a dowry of 30 million euros.

This price makes Son Heung-min the most expensive Asian player, beating Hidetoshi Nakata’s record of 25 million euros when he moved from AS Roma to Parma. Son Heung-min’s story has inspired many people.
