Wu Yibing, a Chinese tennis player, never gave up when playing the first round of the 2023 Miami Open against Kyle Edmund.

The world number 64 managed to beat world number 544, Edmund 7-5, 7-5 to advance to the second round of the Miami Open.

Six seasons ago, the Chinese tennis player debuted at the Miami Open as a 17-year-old qualifier and lost in straight sets to Jared Donaldson. In his first match at the same tournament since then, the 23-year-old broke 28-year-old Edmund four times in a bout that lasted one hour and 35 minutes.

However, the victory was not an easy victory for Wu. He squandered a chance to win at 5-3 in the second set against Edmund who is playing his fourth match of the 2023 season.

However, the 23-year-old did not allow the Briton to fully seize his momentum and find a way to emerge victorious after a backhand return that the struggling player was trying to find again, went too wide on a match point opportunity.

This week last season, Wu was ranked 1,869 in the world. Thanks to the win over Edmund, he will rise to 57th in the world ranking.

The 2023 Dallas Open champion Wu will next face 31st seed Diego Schwartzman to reach the third round of the Miami Open for the first time in his career.

In the draw of the same match, Hungarian national Marton Fucsovics booked a second round match against seventh seed Holger Rune after a 6-4 7-6 victory over Argentine Pedro Cachin.

Guido Pella will meet 24th seed Denis Shapovalov in the second round of the Miami Open after the Argentine defeated Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas 1-6 6-3 6-2.

In other action, the host tennis player who received a wildcard, Emilio Nava was surprisingly able to beat his compatriot, John Isner with tight results 7-6, 7-6. For a place in the third round of the Miami Open, he will challenge his compatriot as well as the ninth seed, Taylor Fritz.
